Who We Are
Sand Rider designer Bill Fertig, a former police officer and avid beachgoer, had used multiple beach wheelchair versions with disappointing results after a motorcycle wreck 20 years back had left him living with paraplegia and using a wheelchair. Existing beach wheelchairs were extremely hard to push, uncomfortable, unattractive and were impossible to transport in Fertig’s car. These outdated beach wheelchairs made a trip to the beach an unpleasant chore for him and his family instead of fun in the sun! Fertig sometimes stayed back at the family vacation house so he wouldn’t be a burden while everyone else enjoyed the day near the water.
This new kind of independence gave sand wheelchair users, like Fertig, the opportunity to be actively involved in beach activities such as digging for clams in tidal areas, shell collecting on barrier islands, and exploring the beaches of the world without hesitation. The Sand Rider can be easily checked as luggage in its special roller duffle bag, or broken down into three parts, without tools, for easy transportation.
